The Molasses Coral Reef Glass Bottom Boat Tour-Key Largo, FL

We’d hummed and hawed about doing this tour because there were a lot of mixed reviews. I really didnt want to miss seeing the coral reef so we decided to give it a try. We really enjoyed getting out on the water, it was a beautiful day and the aqua water colors were gorgeous. Its a 45 minute trip to the coral. When we got there we moved into the salon, glass bottom viewing area, where a guide told us about the reef and the things we were seeing. It was hard to get a good picture of anything to share but we enjoyed seeing the underwater world of the reef. We saw a variety of fish, a few large nursing sharks and a sea turtle. Other than a little seasickess, Rob, we had a really enjoyable time and were glad we gave it a try.

This coral was named after a ship that was carrying molasses, hit the coral reef and sunk. Spilling molasses everywhere. Molasses to make rum.

Florida has lost an estimate of 90% of its coral reef over the last 40 years. Higher seasonal temperatures and storms are said to be the reason. I say it also has a lot to do, if not more so, with the coastal nuclear plants like the one here thats been running for 50 years, heating and radiating the water. Everyone seems to know the possible dangers of a nuclear meltdown but its not common knowledge that nuclear reactors require a tremendous amount of water to keep the reactors cool and that the water holds radiation. Reactors inland contaminate our watersheds too. How is it that this is happening to one of our most important and essential resources for life and for so long already without people knowing? It effects not just the coral and marine life, fresh water fish and those ecosystems, but our drinking water and our food sources not just fish but crops and livestock as well that draw from those watersheds. Current powers have spent millions of tax payers dollars servicing nuclear plants to get them back running, keep them running and building more. The future goal for power is nuclear. Our children are being taught in school that it is a clean energy but the full truth isnt being disclosed.

Sounds cool! Bill and I did two in the UP. One was at Kitch-iti-kipi and the other was a sunken ship tour.

So glad you are taking full advantage of the area. It looked like a beautiful day.
