Washington, DC through New York, The Capital & More of America’s History

Washington, DC through New York, The Capital & More of America’s History

A district not a state. Where the USA government is located. Named after the first President and, DC standing for district of Colombia, after Cristopher Columbus.

If you’ve never been before and want to visit one day, plan on parking on the outskirts, like at Union Station and setting out on foot. There isn’t much parking but there are scooters, bikes or buses available.

We tried to see the main items related to government. There are also a lot of museums to go to. One could spend a solid week here seeing more but plan ahead! We just did a day trip passing by onour way north.

Union Station

Arriving.

Mail Service

An interesting little museum along the way.

Library Congress

The worlds largest collection of books. (A total of three buildings with underground tunnels connecting them.)

Capital Building

We would have liked going inside but it was closed for an event.

Washington and Lincoln Memorials

The White House

You can tour the White House if you buy tickets at least 21 days prior.

We would have liked to get a view of the pentagon but were short on time. You can tour the pentagon but need to buy tickets at least 14 days prior.

Also just a little north is the National Cathedral. Its an Episcopal church, founded in America, created after the American Revolution, separate from the monarchy, described as catholic and protestant. 3/4’s of those that signed the Declaration of Independence were affiliated, as well as over 1/4 of the presidents. Plan on buying tickets for a tour a week prior. Note, services welcome all and are free admission.

If you’re really into American history, in Philadelphia, about 2.5 hrs north, is Independence Hall, where the constitution and bill of rights were signed. Plan on buying tickets a couple days ahead of time.

Lastly, I also wanted to include these places in New York to go with this blogs theme.

Ellis Island

The Statue of Liberty

Accessed by ferry, and also included Ellis Island.

A gift from France supporting America’s Independence and abolishment if slavery.
